Big news for Disney aficionados and thrill-seekers alike: recent reports suggest that Space Mountain at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom may soon shutter its doors for a period of much-needed refurbishment. Concerns have been mounting among Disney Resort guests, who claim that the beloved indoor roller coaster is showing signs of wear and tear, raising questions about its safety.
Space Mountain holds a special place in the hearts of many Disney fans. Versions of this space-themed thrill ride can be found at multiple Disney parks worldwide, including Disneyland Park, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland, with some versions reimagined as Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain. Interestingly, Tokyo Disneyland recently closed its own Space Mountain in Tomorrowland, planning to replace it with a new attraction named “Space Mountain Earthrise,” set to open in 2027.
However, it’s the version at Orlando’s Magic Kingdom that’s currently under scrutiny. Numerous visitors have taken to social media, including Reddit, noting that the ride felt “rocky” and “out of control.” One Redditor, u/Accomplished_Ad5983, shared a post saying, “For real, we love this ride but is it even safe? We rode it and it felt way way faster than normal and our car we swear was rocking side to side which I don’t remember. At some points, it felt out of control.”
While a majority of commenters insist they still feel safe on the ride, they agree that Space Mountain is in dire need of some TLC. User u/ThePlanets14 added, “I trust that while Space Mountain has gotten rough and jenky over the years, that it’s still safe and reliable. I agree that it could use a refurb.”
Walt Disney World Resort has not released any official statement addressing these concerns. Nevertheless, Disney Imagineers are known for their stringent safety protocols, inspecting and testing attraction safety mechanisms regularly. Meanwhile, it’s always a good idea to notify a cast member if you experience anything unusual on a ride.
