Have you been dreaming of riding the iconic Disneyland Monorail? Unfortunately, that dream might have to be put on hold. The Disneyland Monorail, a pioneering project envisioned by Walt Disney in 1959, is a beloved fixture for many Disney aficionados. Inspired by a monorail system he saw in Germany, Disney collaborated with Alweg Research Corporation to bring a high-speed, elevated train to his flagship park, forever changing the way guests experience Disneyland.
Initially offering a scenic tour of Tomorrowland, the monorail quickly evolved into a crucial transportation link between Disneyland and the Disneyland Hotel by 1961. Updates over the years, including the Mark II and Mark III models, extended its capacity and reliability. The addition of the Downtown Disney station in 1999 cemented its role as a key transportation hub, and the current Mark VII model, introduced in 2008, blends modern technology with a classic aesthetic.
Yet, as critical as it is for nostalgia, the Disneyland Monorail is currently down for an extended refurbishment, with no clear reopening date in sight. Even with the park’s official calendar updated through October, there’s no mention of the monorail coming back online. This unusually long downtime is a testament to the scale of the refurbishment and reflects some of the challenges facing the theme park industry post-pandemic.
Adding to the temporary inconvenience, several other popular attractions like the Disneyland Railroad, Jungle Cruise, and “it’s a small world” are also undergoing maintenance. Over at Disney California Adventure, operations are smoother with no major rides closed, although “World of Color – ONE” is currently down for repairs.
The timing of these refurbishments could be linked to recent attendance metrics. According to the Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM’s 2023 Theme Index, lower attendance numbers at Disneyland might have prompted Disney to tackle multiple refurbishments simultaneously. This strategy could minimize disruption during peak times when footfall is expected to recover.
