In an enchanting turn of events for the dedicated employees at Disneyland Resort, the magic behind the scenes just got a little brighter. Following rigorous negotiations, thousands of Disneyland cast members have voted to approve a landmark three-year contract that promises significant wage increases and improved work conditions.
Known for their wholehearted dedication to bringing Disney magic to life daily, these 14,000 cast members—including the ever-vibrant custodians, cheerful ride operators, meticulous candy makers, and friendly merchandise clerks—unanimously agreed to the new terms on July 29. This pivotal contract is set to boost most cast members’ hourly wages by an impressive $6.10 over its duration, lifting the minimum wage from $19.90 to $24 per hour.
In a celebration of their tenure, cast members with over 10 years at the resort will enjoy an additional 50 cents per hour, while those with 20 or more years will see a $2 hourly raise. This agreement not only honors their experience but also brings enhancements to attendance policies and sick leave, allowing cast members more flexibility to manage personal matters without fear of penalties.
Disneyland Resort spokesperson Jessica Good expressed Disney’s enthusiasm, stating, “We are pleased that our cast members approved the new agreements, which, along with all we offer as part of our employment experience, demonstrate how much we value them and our profound commitment to their overall well-being.”
Beyond financial perks, Disney provides a suite of benefits including Employee Assistance programs, childcare, legal and tax support, commuter aid, tuition reimbursement, and the heartwarming VoluntEARS program that connects cast members with local community initiatives.
The journey to this groundbreaking contract wasn’t without its hurdles. The cast members, part of the Master Services Council and represented by various unions including UFCW Local 324 and Teamsters Local 495, had empowered their bargaining unit to call for a strike if necessary. Fortunately, an agreement was reached on July 24, making the strike an unneeded measure.
In an online statement, the Disney Workers Rising Bargaining Committee heralded the achievement: “By ratifying these contracts, Disney cast members have secured historic raises and policies and protections that reflect their role as magic makers in the Disney parks.”
