It’s always an exciting moment when the AECOM and TEA Theme Index report is released, offering a glimpse into the bustling world of theme parks. The 2023 report has painted a varied picture for Disney parks, with some surprises along the way.

EPCOT has seen an impressive climb, moving up several spots and boasting almost a 20% increase in attendance compared to 2022. In contrast, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom have experienced a bit of a stumble, with the latter dropping significantly from its previous position. EPCOT’s success can be attributed to its recent updates and additions which have continued to draw enthusiastic crowds.

Globally, Disney still holds a strong presence, claiming 11 of the top 25 spots. Magic Kingdom remains unchallenged at number one, while Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea have seen some shifts in their rankings. Shanghai Disneyland has made a remarkable leap, partly due to the new Zootopia land which opened in December 2023. European parks like Disneyland Paris have also performed well, reflecting robust growth and climbing up in the rankings.

North America continues to see Magic Kingdom, Disneyland Park, and EPCOT as the top three parks. It’s notable that despite some declines in attendance at places like Hollywood Studios, Disney still claims the majority of the top spots in the region. Meanwhile, Typhoon Lagoon continues to lead in the water parks category, maintaining Disney’s stronghold there too.

Asian parks like Universal Studios Japan have had stellar performances, overtaking Tokyo Disneyland for the top spot. Hong Kong Disneyland also saw significant growth, thanks to the new World of Frozen. It’s an exciting time for theme park enthusiasts, with these shifts and growths sure to bring about even more thrilling experiences in the years to come.
