When my son first visited Walt Disney World at just two months old, I thought we had it all figured out. But it was his first trip to Disneyland at one-year-old that truly opened my eyes to the magic of discovering the parks with a toddler. Despite the distance from Orlando to California, here are the top five reasons why I believe Disneyland should be the first Disney park for your little one.

This means no extra transportation or stroller-folding is needed, allowing for smoother and more enjoyable days. Additionally, if you stay at one of the Disneyland Resorts, such as the Grand Californian, the Disneyland Hotel, or Pixar Place Hotel, you are never more than a 15-minute walk away from the park. This makes returning for naps, pool breaks, or forgotten items easy and stress-free.
Mickey’s Toontown inside Disneyland Park is a toddler wonderland. From Goofy’s interactive house to Donald’s boat with a splash pad, every corner is designed with little ones in mind. Your toddler can even explore both Mickey and Minnie’s homes, which are filled with playful opportunities and perfect photo ops. Add to that the delightful attractions with no height requirements, like Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway and Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin, and you have a recipe for endless fun.
Disneyland’s character interactions are unmatched. The sight of beloved characters spontaneously appearing in Fantasyland to share a moment with guests creates priceless memories. Shorter lines for character meet-and-greets make it easier for young ones who might not have the patience to wait. It’s a fantastic way for your toddler to meet their favorite characters in a relaxed, magical environment.
The abundance of toddler-friendly attractions in Disneyland is another major plus. With over 100 attractions across both parks, including more than 45 with no height minimums in Disneyland Park alone, your family is spoiled for choice. Fantasyland’s compact layout allows you to park your stroller and easily explore 11 toddler-friendly attractions, ensuring everyone’s stamina is well-managed.
Lastly, the comfortable weather of Southern California enhances the experience. Even on the hottest days, you can count on cooler evenings, which can make a huge difference for toddlers sensitive to heat. This allows families to make the most of their time in the parks without worrying about overheating.
No matter the distance, Disneyland remains my top choice for a toddler’s first Disney experience.
