Excitement and curiosity are swirling around Tomorrowland as Disneyland Park announces the indefinite closure of its iconic attraction, Space Mountain. This news arrives shortly after Tokyo Disney Resort bid farewell to its own version of the beloved roller coaster, set to be replaced by the rumored “Space Mountain Earthrise” in 2027. Tokyo’s farewell was marked by special “Celebrating Space Mountain: The Final Ignition” merchandise and a virtual lottery that allowed a lucky few guests to experience one last cosmic journey.
Southern California Disney fans, however, have reason to remain optimistic. According to the Disneyland Resort website, Space Mountain is slated to reopen as early as September 2024. While specific reopening dates have yet to be released, maintenance seems to be the primary focus, suggesting the famous ride will retain its familiar thrills and chills, rather than undergoing any considerable transformations.
While the core Space Mountain experience endures, Disney parks don’t shy away from seasonal overlays. Disneyland often transforms Space Mountain into Hyperspace Mountain, a Star Wars-themed adventure, though no plans for its return this year have been announced. This special overlay is a permanent fixture at Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland but remains an occasional treat in California.
Meanwhile, Walt Disney World in Florida brings its own unique twists to Space Mountain for special events, such as Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. These versions feature varied soundtracks and lighting to match the spirit of the season, promising a new experience for each festive occasion.
