Martha Blanding, a pioneering trailblazer at Disneyland Resort, was recently honored at the Disney Legends Ceremony during the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Blanding, who has made significant strides as Disneyland’s first Black VIP Tour Guide and the first Black female leader at the resort, was celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to the company.
The Disney Legends Award is an honor reserved for individuals who have significantly shaped The Walt Disney Company’s legacy through their outstanding creativity and innovation. Blanding’s career at Disney spans an impressive 50 years, wherein she has witnessed and driven countless changes. Speaking on her journey, Blanding recounted the challenges she overcame as a groundbreaking leader, emphasizing the importance of her parents’ lessons to always strive for excellence.
Reflecting on her career, Blanding highlighted her role in promoting diversity within the company. “I am most proud of being part of the growth of cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion for young Cast Members of color coming behind me. I saw the evolution of BERG diversity groups and was one of the founders of PULSE,” she mentioned, referencing the influential Black diversity group she helped establish.
During the star-studded ceremony, Blanding received a special presentation from renowned dancer and choreographer Derek Hough. The Disneyland Band and The Dapper Dans delighted the audience with a performance of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” enhancing the magical atmosphere. Blanding’s enduring dedication was celebrated through a heartfelt video featuring celebrities like Dwayne Johnson and Heidi Klum, alongside tributes from her colleagues.
Blanding expressed her gratitude and surprise at receiving the Disney Legend title, an accolade she had not anticipated. She emphasized her journey from an hourly Cast Member to a Disney Legend as a testament to the possibilities within the company. Her story is a beacon of inspiration, encouraging others to pursue excellence regardless of the challenges they may face.
