Nestled in a corner of Disneyland, Critter Country, a charming enclave that began as an Indian Village with Native American dances and teepees, is on the brink of yet another delightful transformation. On November 15, Critter Country will officially become Bayou Country, welcoming Princess Tiana and her enchanting world with the grand opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
The journey from Indian Village to Bayou Country has been a fascinating one. Starting in 1955, Indian Village showcased authentic Native American culture, complete with animal hide teepees, ceremonial dances, and self-guided Indian War Canoe rides. This vibrant cultural hub tapped into the era’s love for Western-themed entertainment, creating an immersive experience for Disneyland’s early guests.
In 1972, a significant change ushered in Bear Country, with the Country Bear Jamboree as its centerpiece. This whimsical land celebrated the rustic charm of the Pacific Northwest, where animatronic bears sang country tunes. It also saw the renaming of the Indian War Canoes to Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes, providing guests with an adventurous paddle around the Rivers of America.
By 1989, Critter Country emerged with the launch of Splash Mountain, re-themed to the “Song of the South.” The area’s identity pivoted to embrace a broader spectrum of animated critters, further reflected in attractions like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, which replaced the Country Bear Jamboree in 2003.
As Disneyland moves towards Bayou Country, the transition pays homage to Princess Tiana’s legacy, following her tale after “The Princess and the Frog.” The revamped land promises a rich array of experiences, including the Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree and specialty shops like Louis’ Critter Club and Ray’s Berets. Remarkably, Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes stand as the enduring link through all these transformations, dating back to their origins in Indian Village.
