Just days after yet another Pirates of the Caribbean breakdown at Walt Disney World Resort, a wave of new ideas is surfacing for potential replacements for the controversial classic ride at Disneyland Resort. While Pirates of the Caribbean has seen numerous updates over the years—like the addition of Captain Jack Sparrow and the transformation of the bride auction scene—some fans feel it might be time for something fresh.
Despite these updates, the ride continues to draw criticism. Just last year, a guest’s social media post gained significant attention after she expressed feeling uncomfortable by the male pirate animatronics. “I just think this is kind of a weird ride,” she said. “I don’t know… It’s just a little bit rapey.”
Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort aren’t planning to retire Pirates of the Caribbean anytime soon, but subtle changes are already happening. Notably, Disneyland Park removed Captain Jack Sparrow from Fantasmic!, and Magic Kingdom Park recently closed its adjacent restaurant, Tortuga Tavern. Discussions about a proposed Pirates of the Caribbean-themed bar seem to have stalled.

From a dark ride through space in Tomorrowland to a revival of the classic “Adventure Thru Inner Space,” fans suggested a range of creative concepts. One Reddit user, u/Plutosanimationz, even proposed a land based on Atlantis or Treasure Planet, despite acknowledging the performance of those movies.
While Tomorrowland emerged as a popular location for a new attraction, not everyone is optimistic. One user argued that upper management at Disney may lack faith in the creativity of their staff, making the company hesitant to take risks on non-IP-based concepts.
