A coalition representing over 13,000 beloved Cast Members at Disneyland Resort has recently filed charges against Disney over a new policy involving union buttons. The Master Services Council (MSC), which encompasses various unions from ride operators to merchandise Cast Members, claims that Disney has been unfairly disciplining employees who are exercising their right to wear union buttons at work. These buttons, proudly displaying the “Disney Workers Rising” logo, have become a symbol of solidarity amid ongoing contract negotiations.
Disneyland Resort spokesperson Jessica Good responded to these allegations by stating, “Cast Members may only wear buttons and pins that are a part of their costumes while at work so that the show is maintained for our guests.” However, MSC stands firm, asserting that wearing these buttons is a legitimate form of union activity, and Disney should not be taking any retaliatory actions.
Negotiations for a new contract began on April 24 and are crucial as the current agreements are set to expire soon. Among the MSC’s demands are higher wages, a topic that resonates deeply with many Cast Members. Michi Cordell, a Fairy Godmother’s Apprentice at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, emphasized, “These unfair labor practices are hindering our ability to get the fair contract we deserve and Disney must be held accountable.”
This tension comes on the heels of Disneyland Resort performers voting to unionize under Actors’ Equity. They, too, are seeking improvements in pay, health, safety conditions, and more flexible schedules. It’s clear that many Cast Members are looking for better working conditions and recognition for the magic they bring to the guests daily.
