In an exhilarating turn of events, the Disneyland Fire Department’s Smoke on the Water team has toppled the formidable Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, claiming the coveted “Fastest on the River” trophy at the 2024 Disneyland employee canoe races. Held before the park opened to the public on Thursday, August 1, the enthusiastic firefighters paddled their way to glory, completing a full loop of the Rivers of America in just 3 minutes and 44 seconds–a whole 10 seconds faster than their fierce competitors.
John Simpson, team captain and Disneyland Firefighter, shared his joy, remarking, “It felt great. Such a sense of accomplishment for our entire team.” The Davy Crockett teams, typically the race’s reigning champions, graciously cheered on their contenders, igniting a friendly spirit of rivalry. “They were very supportive and encouraged us at each of our starts,” noted Simpson in an email interview.
The summer tradition of canoe races has been a beloved fixture at Disneyland for more than six decades, spreading to Disney parks worldwide. This year, the competition saw teams comprised of Disneyland, Walt Disney Imagineering employees, and more, all striving to make their mark. Practices started in June, with events extending into August, every stroke preparing them for the ultimate contest held in the early morning hours.
The resounding victory was even more special for team mascot Hank Ameen, a Disneyland Firefighter with over 60 years of service. At the age of 92, Ameen joined Smoke on the Water for a victory lap around Tom Sawyer Island, embodying the team’s motto, “Win One for Hank.” Simpson proudly stated, “To finally realize it, I am very proud of our commitment.”
As this year’s champions prepare to defend their title in 2025, Simpson and his team have set their sights on breaking the fastest time ever posted, striving to put in their best performance yet. In the spirit of competition and camaraderie, the Disneyland community continues to shine, fostering friendships and making unforgettable memories along the way.
