On July 26, 2024, Disney Parks nationwide will be awash in a sea of blue as disability advocates come together to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event, spearheaded by DAS Defenders, is a call for unity, inviting disabled park guests, caregivers, and allies to join in this vibrant celebration.
Attendees are encouraged to don the color “parking placard blue” and add a unique flair to their outfits or mobility devices. This serves not just as a marker of participation but as a poignant reminder of the often unseen challenges faced by many disabled individuals.
This gathering arises amid rising tensions between Disney and the disability community due to recent modifications in the Disability Access Service (DAS), changes that have left many feeling marginalized. The adjustments, which Disney announced earlier this spring to address “overuse” issues, have sparked discontent among many disabled fans. “Right now, disabled fans of the Disney Parks are hurting,” shared a DAS Defenders spokesperson. “Disney has long held a cherished spot in our community for its inclusivity, allowing us to enjoy vacations with our loved ones despite our disabilities.”
The modifications have reportedly led to increased scrutiny and questioning of mobility devices and service animals, alongside a surge in online harassment targeted at disabled content creators accused of misusing DAS. Despite these challenges, DAS Defenders stress that their event is not a protest but rather a celebration and a show of strength. “We belong in the parks!” the organization proclaimed, promoting a message of unity, kindness, and support.
Both EPCOT and Disneyland will host the event. At EPCOT, the group will gather at Connections Café at 10 am and 7 pm to enjoy meals, rides, and a group photo in front of the iconic Spaceship Earth. Disneyland participants will meet at 10 am near the picnic tables outside the entrance, culminating in a photo at Sleeping Beauty Castle at noon, with a further meetup planned for 7 pm on Main Street.
Organizers highlight the importance of respecting park rules and other guests, underscoring that the event aims to foster community and positively commemorate the ADA’s legacy.
