Attention all Disney fans! If you have plans to visit any of the magical Disney resorts around the globe, here’s something crucial you need to know. Unfortunately, Disney’s magic can’t stop Mother Nature’s whims, and Disney parks have had to contend with natural calamities over the years.
For instance, Walt Disney World in Orlando, renowned for its enchanting experiences, lies in a hurricane-prone zone. The resort has faced severe storms, causing the temporary closure of all its parks, including Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, on multiple occasions. Similarly, Disneyland Resort in California recently had its first hurricane-induced closure in August 2023 due to Hurricane Hilary.
When it comes to earthquakes, Disneyland Resort in Anaheim often steals the spotlight. Nestled in an earthquake-prone region, Disneyland has witnessed several tremors. A recent 4.6 magnitude quake in the Los Angeles area led to the temporary shutdown of multiple rides for safety checks. Further afield, Tokyo Disney Resort has also faced its share of seismic activity. Most notably, the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake forced the closure of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea for over a month, resulting in significant financial losses.
Just recently, Japan experienced a 6.2-magnitude earthquake near Hokkaido, following a 7.1-magnitude quake earlier that injured several individuals. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has taken the unprecedented step of issuing a “megaquake alert” due to heightened seismic activity in the Nankai Trough, a region capable of producing powerful earthquakes. While Urayasu, where Tokyo Disney Resort is situated, is relatively safer, it is still under advisory for potential tsunami waves.
In light of these developments, many visitors are rethinking their travel plans to Japan. However, some experts suggest that the chances of a catastrophic earthquake happening soon remain low. Have you been to Tokyo Disney Resort or are you planning a trip there? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments, and don’t forget to share this story with your friends.
