A new chapter of Disney magic unfurled in China as the 50th Disney Fun House officially opened its doors, brimming with the enchanting theme of “Zootopia.” This latest addition is now a beacon of joy at the Children’s Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine in Hangzhou, designed to lift spirits and sprinkle a bit of Disney wonder among young patients and their families.
Originally announced back in June 2016 during the grand opening celebration of Shanghai Disney Resort, Disney pledged a whopping $3.1 million USD (RMB 20 million) to launch Disney-themed play spaces in 50 children’s hospitals across China. Fast forward to today, they’ve turned this dream into reality, marking an incredible milestone as they celebrate Shanghai Disney Resort’s 8th anniversary.
Each Disney Fun House is a rich tapestry of vibrant murals, beloved Disney characters, and whimsical storytelling straight from Disney films. The Zootopia-themed Fun House in Hangzhou showcases the iconic Zootopia skyline and even features a unique Zootopia-themed mobile movie theater. Here, young patients can immerse themselves in their favorite cartoons, short movie clips, and documentaries, all within the comforting world of Zootopia.
Celebrating the grand opening, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde made special appearances, handing out Zootopia-themed plush toys and hand-made crafts. Disney VoluntEARS joined the excitement, sharing smiles with young patients during a day filled with dancing and drawing. To spread even more Disney magic, around 5,000 Disney-themed gifts were distributed across all 50 Fun Houses throughout China.
This initiative, a collaboration between The Walt Disney Company China, Shanghai Disney Resort, China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, and Shanghai Charity Foundation, ensures that Disney’s touch reaches children in 41 cities across 24 regions in Mainland China. It is a testament to Disney’s enduring commitment to bring joy, inspiration, and hope to children undergoing treatment and recovery.
