The 1st Marine Division Band and its breakout group, the Old Breed Brass Band, recently brought an extra dose of patriotic spirit to the Disneyland Resort, performing as part of the 4th of July celebrations. Guests at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure were treated to stirring performances from these talented musicians on July 4th and 5th, adding an extra layer of magic to the already festive atmosphere.
On July 4th, the Old Breed Brass Band energized the crowds at the Pixar Pier Band Shell, while the full 1st Marine Division Band paraded through Disney California Adventure. Later, they took part in the patriotic flag retreat at Disneyland. The following day, July 5th, saw the band scaling new heights as they performed on the Avengers HQ building in Avengers Campus and serenaded visitors at Paradise Gardens Park. The grand finale was a historic performance in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle, marking the first time a military ensemble played at this iconic location, before concluding their tour at “it’s a small world.”
The band’s presence at the Disneyland Resort wasn’t just about music. It was steeped in history and service. Formed in 1940 during World War II, the 1st Marine Division Band has a storied past, having seen action in significant conflicts from World War II to the Persian Gulf War, and has continued to provide both musical and security support during operations in Iraq. The ensemble consists of approximately 50 Marine musicians and annually engages in about 400 performances, including notable appearances at the Winter Olympic Games and the Tournament of Roses Parade.
The 4th of July week at Disneyland Resort was a spectacle of performances by various military bands, including the Mobility of the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West and a rock group from the California Army National Guard’s 40th Infantry Division Band. Each group contributed to the celebratory mood, offering a variety of musical experiences for park guests.
