Just last week, the eyes of Disney fans everywhere were firmly fixed on San Diego Comic-Con 2024. One of the highlights of the event was the “Illustrating Disney Magic” panel, where celebrated Disney Illustrator Rick Law shared delightful anecdotes and fascinating stories about his career with moderator Jeff DePaoli of the “Dizney Coast-to-Coast” podcast.

The session kicked off with a vibrant sizzle reel encapsulating Rick Law’s monumental contributions to Disney, followed by an enthusiastic introduction from Jeff DePaoli. A lesser-known fact about Rick Law is that his journey with Disney began humbly in the shipping department of Disney Home Entertainment. Displaying his artistic prowess led to his big break when he doodled Mickey Mouse on a coworker’s birthday card, eventually landing him a role as a VHS cover illustrator.

Law’s memorable work includes the iconic cover for “The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride.” Interestingly, for the creation of “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” VHS cover, Rick rode the Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride attraction at Disneyland approximately 50 times to gain authentic inspiration. Despite his exhaustive dedication, he humorously noted his disappointment when Disney flipped the direction of the film strip in the final version, making it look like the characters were “walking off a cliff.”

A particularly touching moment occurred when Rick discussed his favorite project, “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas.” He shared how thrilled he was to see the connection between Mickey and Walt Disney immortalized in McDonald’s Happy Meal toys based on his cover art. Another surprise came when he walked into a McDonald’s and saw his creations as toys, describing it as a surreal experience.

The panel concluded on a contemporary note with Rick reflecting on technological trends, remarking humorously, “None of this stuff was created by A.I., but A.I. does steal my stuff.” To cap it all, he shared a humorous incident where his team was questioned about Donald Duck’s handedness, to which they cleverly responded, “He’s ambi-duck-strous.”
