Ryan Reynolds has once again taken the internet by storm, this time by revealing Disney’s bold decision to greenlight an R-rated ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ film. Known for its family-friendly productions, Disney’s choice to honor the mature tone of the beloved Merc with a Mouth has fans both excited and surprised.
In a chat with Fandango, Reynolds—returning as the wisecracking anti-hero—expressed his appreciation for Disney’s bravery. “I’m really proud of them for doing this,” he shared. “[It’s] a huge step for them…it adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining forever.”
Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, which originally produced the ‘Deadpool’ movies, there was palpable concern among fans about maintaining the series’ signature dark humor. Luckily, both Reynolds and director Shawn Levy confirmed that the film will keep its R-rated integrity. “There’s no other way to do it,” Reynolds stated. “[The R rating] really [allowed] us to do anything and everything in a world where anything and everything is possible.”
Levy also highlighted that newcomers can dive into the movie without previous knowledge of the ‘Deadpool’ universe. Speaking to the Associated Press, he assured, “This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research.”
