Ryan Reynolds couldn’t contain his excitement as he discussed his gratitude toward Disney for allowing *Deadpool* to remain R-rated. Chatting with Fandango, the *Deadpool* star emphasized how thrilled he was that Disney, a studio known for its family-friendly reputation, decided to keep the edgy, adult nature of the beloved antihero intact.
The acquisition of Fox by Disney naturally stirred concerns among fans about the future tone of their favorite Merc with a Mouth. However, Reynolds praised Disney, stating, “I hope it doesn’t sound condescending, I’m really proud of them for doing this. I think it’s a huge step for them.” He continued to say how this decision adds a new dimension to Disney’s diverse entertainment roster.
Reynolds acknowledged his initial surprise, saying, “I was surprised though that they let us go as ‘hard R’! But very grateful. I mean, there’s no other way to do [Deadpool].” Indeed, the *Deadpool* character’s irreverence and mature themes are a core part of its identity, and toning it down at this stage would not have resonated with the audience.
Excitingly, *Deadpool & Wolverine* will be the first R-rated Marvel movie under Disney’s banner. Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine, but he’s playing a different version of the character from the one we bid farewell to in *Logan*. This dynamic pairing of Deadpool and Wolverine promises not just explosive action but a continuation of the gritty storytelling fans have come to love.
Director Shawn Levy assured fans that despite being a part of the “Mouse House,” the film stays true to Deadpool’s audacious and edgy tone. When asked about the inclusion of Disney jokes, Levy teased, “Oh, I’ll never tell!… but we were clear from the get-go, we said, ‘Well if the three of us are going to do this, we’ve got to be truthful to the tone of a Deadpool movie.'”
Mark your calendars for the release of *Deadpool & Wolverine* on July 25th. We can’t wait to see what mischief and mayhem this unlikely duo gets up to!
