Great news for Disney fans! The highly anticipated Aladdin spinoff film based on the charming Prince Anders is still in development. Despite some setbacks due to the pandemic, the project is moving forward, according to Billy Magnussen, the actor who brought Prince Anders to life in the 2019 live-action Aladdin remake.

The spinoff was first announced in 2019 after being pitched by Magnussen himself, with writers Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme onboard to craft the script. Since then, the film has gone through several rewrites and faced delays, primarily attributed to the unprecedented challenges brought on by COVID-19. However, in a recent interview, Magnussen reassured fans that the project is “not dead” and continues to be a work in progress.

“We were really putting it together when the pandemic hit,” Magnussen revealed. “There were a few changes with a few companies, but it’s as alive as ever. Every day, we are creating these beautiful stories. In my career, I just like doing fun stuff. What would I want to see, and what would I want to hang out and do? So no, it’s not dead. It’s still going.”

It’s a relief to hear that the Aladdin spinoff hasn’t fallen victim to the same fate as other Disney spinoffs. The Gaston-centric series from “Beauty and the Beast” and various Star Wars spinoffs have faced their share of hurdles. Projects like Guillermo del Toro’s Jabba the Hutt film and Patty Jenkins’ “Rogue Squadron” have either been indefinitely delayed or scrapped altogether.

Magnussen’s passion and optimism about the Prince Anders spinoff are reassuring, and it seems this project holds a special place for both the fans and the creative team. Considering how well-received the 2019 live-action Aladdin was, it’s no surprise that interest remains high for further exploration of its delightful characters.
