Disney’s new live-action adaptation of “Snow White” has stumbled out of the gate, making waves for all the wrong reasons at the box office. With a modest global opening weekend haul of $87 million, including only $43 million from domestic audiences, the numbers suggest a struggle to resonate with viewers similar to other recent Disney remakes.

For context, “Snow White” trails far behind other Disney live-action giants. Compared to the mammoth openings of “The Lion King” at $191 million and “Beauty and the Beast” at $174 million, “Snow White’s” performance pales. Even mid-tier performers like “Aladdin” and “The Little Mermaid” managed $91 million and $95 million respectively. Impressively, only the less-hyped films like “Maleficent” ($69 million) and “Cinderella” ($67 million) earn less than “Snow White.”

Critics haven’t been kind either. With a lackluster 44% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film suffers from its unappealing CGI dwarves, a criticized script, and direction. Even Gal Gadot’s portrayal of the villain fails to win praise, with only Rachel Zegler’s performance and singing standing out as bright spots.

The future appears bleak for “Snow White,” but one can always hold on to hope. “Mufasa: The Lion King,” for instance, also had a poor start but ended up raking in $717 million worldwide. However, many believe this to be an exception rather than a likely outcome for “Snow White.”

As we watch how “Snow White” fares in the coming weeks, it’s clear this adaptation hasn’t begun its journey with the magic Disney intended. Rachel Zegler may be on to bigger and better things—like her upcoming role as Eva Perón in London’s West End—but “Snow White” seems destined to be an unfortunate misstep for the House of Mouse.
