The long-awaited live-action remake of Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” hit theaters on March 21, and it seems to be surrounded by a whirlwind of controversy. From fan backlash to casting disputes, the film has been a hot topic. As a lifelong Disney aficionado, I had to see if the remake lived up to its storied legacy or if it was just another attempt at modernizing a classic that missed the mark.

Having grown up with Disney’s 1937 original, I was curious to see how Disney would balance faithfulness to the classic while incorporating contemporary elements. While the movie wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen, it certainly wasn’t a masterpiece. One of the film’s most significant points of contention was Disney’s decision to use CGI-created dwarfs instead of casting real actors. The choice left many, including me, with mixed feelings. Real actors could have delivered depth and relatability, something the CGI characters unfortunately lacked.

Rachel Zegler, who stars as Snow White, stole the show, transitioning flawlessly from a timid maiden to a resolute young woman. Her performance was a beacon of brilliance amidst a sea of mediocrity, hinting at a promising future for the young actress. However, the same can’t be said for Gal Gadot, whose portrayal of the Evil Queen fell flat. Unlike the chilling performances of Charlize Theron’s Evil Stepmother in “Snow White and The Huntsman” or Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent, Gadot’s performance lacked the sinister essence needed for a Disney villain.

The dwarfs, central to the original narrative, seemed almost like an afterthought here. Aside from the familiar faces of Grumpy and Dopey, the rest were barely given enough screen time to distinguish themselves. This deviation from the original left a void, making the story feel somewhat disjointed.

Although the film is likely to enchant young viewers with its magical universe, it leaves long-time fans yearning for more. With Disney’s vast resources and storytelling prowess, this remake feels like a missed opportunity to deliver a timeless, enchanting experience.
