Disney’s 2023 Haunted Mansion film did not reach the box office heights it aimed for, and director Justin Simien is reflecting on the project’s challenges and outcomes. With a hefty budget of $150 million, the film’s earnings fell short, grossing less than $118 million, leading to a reported loss of approximately $117 million for Disney. Critics weren’t kind either, giving it a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audience reception was much warmer, with an impressive 84% score.
In a recent interview with Collider, Simien opened up about his mixed feelings regarding the film’s performance. Promoting his new MGM+ series Hollywood Black, Simien acknowledged the difficulties but expressed pride in the audience’s positive feedback. “I’m really proud of myself,” said Simien. “When the release came, there was just a lot of conversation that was difficult to be in the middle of.”
Simien also emphasized his satisfaction with the film’s emotional core, which centers on a Black man grappling with his emotions—a narrative not often explored in mainstream cinema. “I’m so proud that there is a movie out there where there’s a relationship between a Black man who is struggling to feel his feelings,” Simien added. “That speaks to my heart and my soul and the things I need from stories.”
The movie, inspired by the iconic Disney theme park ride, was written by Katie Dippold and boasts a star-studded cast including LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, and many others. Even if Haunted Mansion didn’t become a blockbuster, it has found a place in the hearts of many viewers, now available for streaming on Disney+.
