Walt Disney Co. and Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” continues its meteoric ascent at the box office, amassing a staggering $824 million globally merely two weeks into its release. The film shattered records with a breathtaking $38.5 million garnered during its Thursday previews, setting a new benchmark for R-rated films.
Fans can’t get enough of seeing Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman back in action as the iconic duo. The film has already outperformed the entire theatrical runs of its predecessors—2016’s “Deadpool” and 2018’s “Deadpool 2.” With these staggering numbers, it’s no wonder “Deadpool & Wolverine” is now the second-highest grossing movie of 2024, only trailing behind “Inside Out 2,” which has earned an impressive $1.555 billion.
Not only does this film stand among the highest grossing R-rated movies in history, ranking just behind “Joker” at $1.07 billion and “Oppenheimer” at $975 million, but it’s also on a promising path to breach the coveted $1 billion mark soon. Over this past weekend, Disney celebrated another milestone, becoming the first studio in 2024 to surpass $3 billion in global ticket sales with just four major releases: “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Inside Out 2,” “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” and “The First Omen.”
Adding to its success, “Deadpool & Wolverine” also performed spectacularly in premium formats like Imax, which contributed significantly—$17.5 million in global weekend ticket sales and $64.5 million in total.
Disney’s 2009 investment in Marvel has proved exceedingly beneficial, adding approximately $13.2 billion in value by March 2024, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This blockbuster success aligns with Disney’s financial health, with a reported 1% year-on-year revenue growth to $22.08 billion as of May, despite being slightly below analyst estimations.
For fans and investors alike, Disney’s stock actions are intriguing. DIS recently saw a dip, closing 3.74% lower at $89.57, while IMAX saw a modest rise, closing 0.57% higher at $21.30. These metrics offer a glimpse into the market’s response to box office performances.
