In a dazzling display of box office prowess, Disney has shattered records, becoming the first studio to surpass the $3 billion mark in global box office revenue for 2024. This feat was achieved with just four wide releases, including titles from its newly acquired 20th Century Studios.
Disney initially faced challenges with “The First Omen,” which underperformed, earning just $54 million globally against a $30 million budget. However, fortunes turned with the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which generated $396 million worldwide. Yet, the true turnaround came when “Inside Out 2” hit theaters, grossing over $1.56 billion globally and earning its place as the highest-grossing animated movie of all time.
Adding to this success is “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has already raked in $824 million worldwide. This superhero blockbuster is on track to surpass the $1 billion milestone, making it the third-biggest R-rated film in global box office history.
Not only have these films been financial successes, but they’ve also received commendable reviews. “The First Omen” holds an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” has an 80% score, “Inside Out 2” proudly holds a 91% score, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” enjoys a 78% score. This critical acclaim, combined with their box office success, exemplifies Disney’s formula for winning over audiences worldwide.
Looking ahead, Disney isn’t resting on its laurels. The studio has “Alien: Romulus” set to release in a couple of weeks, followed by the much-anticipated “Moana 2” in November and “Mufasa: The Lion King” in December, all expected to continue the streak of box office triumphs.
