Interest in Disney’s 2001 animated gem “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” has surged, igniting recent online chatter about a potential live-action adaptation. The original film enchanted audiences with the story of Milo Thatch, a scholarly cartographer voiced by the beloved Michael J. Fox, who leads an expedition to uncover the mysteries of the legendary underwater city, Atlantis.

However, for all the buzz, it’s important to clarify that the circulating images of a live-action Atlantis – including a striking depiction of Millie Bobby Brown as Kida – are purely the work of AI, not actual scenes from a forthcoming remake. These fan-generated creations have understandably stirred excitement, but as of now, there are no official plans from Disney to bring this animated classic into the live-action realm.

This isn’t the first time fans have speculated about an Atlantis live-action project. In fact, back in 2020, Kirk Wise, one of the directors of the original film, addressed similar rumors. Speaking to MovieWeb, Wise dismissed the chatter, stating that any supposed plans for a remake were “strictly on the internet” with no substantial backing. Moreover, his co-director, Gary Trousdale, confirmed this stance, noting that Atlantis was noticeably absent from Disney’s future project lists announced at events like the D23 Expo.

While Disney’s slate of upcoming remakes includes anticipated titles like “Snow White,” “Moana,” and “Lilo & Stitch,” Atlantis has not yet made the cut. This might come as a disappointment to the film’s dedicated fans who believe its adventurous spirit and unique narrative are perfect for a live-action treatment. Despite its lackluster performance at the box office in 2001, the movie has maintained a cult following that keeps fuelling dreams of a new rendition.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy the original animated adventure streaming on Disney+ and even delve into creative fan-made adaptations available online. Who knows? With enough enthusiasm and time, perhaps Disney might eventually consider plunging into this cinematic treasure trove.
