When Disneyland first opened its magical gates on July 17th, 1955, Walt Disney himself shared a moving dedication: “Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future.” Seven decades later, Walt’s spirit not only lives on but is set to become even more tangible in 2025 with the introduction of an unprecedented show at the Main Street Opera House—Walt Disney: A Magical Life.

Announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event by Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro, this new show will feature the first-ever Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney himself. This groundbreaking creation pays homage to the technology Walt pioneered 60 years ago with Abraham Lincoln at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. “Creating our first Walt figure is an idea that’s been whispered in the hallowed halls of Imagineering for years,” D’Amaro revealed. “We just had to wait for innovation to catch up with our dreams. And we’re finally ready.”

The theater will transform into Walt’s studio office, intertwining Disney’s past, present, and future narratives. Playing in rotation with the much-beloved Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, this new show promises to be a bridge to the heart and soul of Disney storytelling. As Tom Fitzgerald, Senior Creative Executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, put it, “So much of Walt’s philosophy is timeless, and as valid today as it was in his lifetime.”

Bringing an icon like Walt Disney to life through an Audio-Animatronics figure is no small feat. “We’ve created many figures over the years from pirates to presidents, but capturing Walt’s essence was both an honor and a challenge,” Fitzgerald shared. “The twinkle in the eye, his expressive face, and the way he punctuated thoughts with his hands—these nuances had to be perfect.” The Imagineers worked meticulously, even scouring through Walt’s speeches and personal documents in the archives to ensure every detail was as accurate as possible.

Senior Creative Executive Brian Orr noted, “Walt Disney is an iconic figure and we have an enormous responsibility to make sure he feels believable and connects authentically with our audience.” He added that the new figure would incorporate never-before-seen innovations, making it the most lifelike human figure Imagineering has ever created. “This project has been a labor of love for the team of Imagineers—one which we hope Walt would be proud of.”
