The world of children’s entertainment recently bid farewell to one of its brightest stars, Steve Lee, who passed away peacefully at the age of 73 in Brighton General Hospital. Known for his incredible talent and creativity, Lee’s career spanned several decades and continents, leaving an indelible mark on the industry, particularly through his work with the BBC and The Walt Disney Company.

Lee’s journey in entertainment began with the co-founding of The Puppeteers’ Company alongside Peter Franklin in the 1980s, after meeting at the Da Silva Puppet Company. The duo captivated audiences on numerous BBC shows, including the immensely popular Paul Daniels Boxing Day special and Stilgoes On, a charming children’s series about hobbies. Their unique blend of puppetry charmed millions, making them household names.

Lee’s talents caught the eye of The Walt Disney Company, which commissioned him to write scripts for two primetime Disney Time specials. These specials aired in the UK and Europe, delighting countless families with their whimsy and innovation. Beyond television, Lee and Franklin’s performances spanned the globe as they brought marionette cabaret to cruise liners and graced international arts festivals in Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong.

One of their most notable achievements was a 1986 performance of Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince. Masterfully orchestrated, the show featured ten puppets controlled solely by Lee and Franklin—another testament to their extraordinary skill and creativity. Although The Puppeteers’ Company held its final show in 2012, their legacy within the puppetry world remains unshaken, especially following Franklin’s passing soon after.

Lee’s passion for puppetry was sparked early by a visit to the International Puppet Festival in Colwyn Bay, setting him on a path that would enchant audiences around the world. He is survived by his partner Gril Mulluish, sister Barbara, and niece Kerry.

We invite you to share your thoughts and memories of Steve Lee in the comments below. Let’s celebrate the life and contributions of this extraordinary entertainer together.
