Over the past week, visitors to Pandora – The World of Avatar at Walt Disney World have noticed something peculiar and disappointing: the disappearance of key animatronic figures from two of the land’s most popular attractions. Both Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey no longer showcase their iconic Na’vi figures, and fans are buzzing with questions.
Pandora – The World of Avatar, which opened in 2017, remains one of Disney’s most groundbreaking expansions. The land’s immersive environment, complete with floating mountains, bioluminescent flora, and detailed set pieces, has long enchanted guests. Two flagship rides, Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey, have consistently drawn crowds, largely due to their spellbinding animatronic characters.
Social media recently erupted with posts revealing that the giant Na’vi figure inside the Flight of Passage queue had been removed. This detailed animatronic, floating serenely in a water-filled tube, was a fan favorite, and its absence has left visitors scratching their heads. Equally troubling, the Na’vi Shaman animatronic at the end of the Na’vi River Journey has also been taken out of the attraction. Disney has not yet explained why these animatronics were removed or provided a timeline for their return.
These animatronics are not just decorative elements; they are essential to the storytelling and experience of each ride. The Na’vi Shaman, in particular, is reported to have cost over $20 million, underscoring the significant investment Disney has made in these lifelike figures. While Disney often employs “B modes” or backup systems to keep the story flowing during such absences, long-time fans undoubtedly feel the difference.
What’s behind these sudden changes? Though speculation is rife, Disney has yet to disclose any specific reasons. Maintenance, refurbishment, or technological upgrades could be potential explanations.
