At the latest D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Martha Blanding was celebrated as a Disney Legend, earning recognition for her groundbreaking career at Disneyland Resort. Blanding stands out as the first Black VIP Tour Guide and the first Black female leader at Disneyland, and her contributions reflect the very spirit of Disney’s commitment to diversity and excellence.

The Disney Legends Award honors individuals whose creativity and innovation have significantly shaped The Walt Disney Company’s history. Over the past 37 years, this accolade has spotlighted luminaries from TV, film, and music. Blanding’s reflection on her journey is deeply inspiring: “Being the first Black Permanent Tour Guide, VIP Hostess, and becoming the first Black Female in Management in my eyes was amazing. My parents taught me to always put my best foot forward and always do my best, and that’s what I did,” she shared in an interview for The Walt Disney Company’s blog.

During her 50-year tenure, Blanding played a vital role in driving diversity within Disneyland’s theme parks and resort divisions. She co-founded PULSE (People, United, Lead, Serve, Excel), a Black diversity group, and witnessed the company’s evolution, from adding new lands and attractions to fostering a more inclusive environment. Her dedication to creating magical experiences for guests and colleagues has left an indelible mark on the Disney legacy.

The ceremony included a heartfelt presentation by dancer and choreographer Derek Hough, along with a rendition of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” performed by The Dapper Dans and the Disneyland Band. Hough lauded Blanding’s enduring dedication, stating, “She is a part of the foundation that makes Disneyland the happiest place on Earth.”

A tribute video featuring celebrities like Dwayne Johnson and Heidi Klum, alongside Walt Disney Company colleagues, added to the emotional evening. Blanding herself was moved by the recognition, saying, “Becoming a Disney Legend was not something that I thought would happen to me. This makes me proud because I am proof that an hourly Cast Member can become a Disney Legend.”
