Harmony has been restored to the “happiest place on Earth”! In a significant development, thousands of Disneyland Resort employees have successfully ratified new contracts, thereby averting what could have been the first strike at the iconic Anaheim theme park in four decades. Disney cast members across Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and the Disneyland Resort hotels have collectively secured historic raises, along with new policies and protections.
The Master Services Council, a coalition of labor unions representing approximately 14,000 Disneyland Resort employees, reached an agreement with Walt Disney Co. just in the nick of time—mere days after union members had overwhelmingly authorized a potential strike. The three-year agreements feature pay increases which will result in a $6.10 per hour raise throughout the contract’s duration, setting a higher minimum wage of $24 an hour by 2024.
“We are pleased that our cast members approved the new agreements, which, along with all we offer as part of our employment experience, demonstrate how much we value them and our profound commitment to their overall well-being,” said Disneyland Resort spokesperson Jessica Good in a statement.
The negotiation journey wasn’t without its challenges. Earlier, the Master Services Council had moved forward with a strike authorization vote and filed unfair labor practice charges against Disney, asserting that the company threatened to discipline employees for wearing union buttons showcasing Mickey Mouse’s raised fist—an act the unions claimed was protected collective action.
As the old Disneyland contracts expired and new deals hovered on the horizon, cast members stood united by attending rallies and sharing their stories. Their resilience and solidarity have culminated in these groundbreaking contracts, marking a hopeful future for Disneyland’s dedicated workforce.
