Exciting news from The Walt Disney Company as they inch closer to finding the perfect successor for Bob Iger. After being at the helm since 2005, Iger originally retired in 2021, only to return in 2022 to replace Bob Chapek. With his contract now extended through December 31, 2026, Disney’s search for a new CEO is heating up.
In a major development, Disney announced on August 21st, 2024, that James P. Gorman has been appointed to chair the Succession Planning Committee. Gorman, a recent addition to Disney’s Board, brings invaluable experience from his tenure as Executive Chairman of Morgan Stanley, where he also successfully navigated their succession process.
Mark G. Parker, Chairman of the Board, praised Gorman’s leadership, stating, “James is a highly respected leader, and we’ve asked him to serve as the new Chair of the Succession Planning Committee given his deep succession planning experience and long-term strategic mentality.” Joining Gorman on the committee are seasoned directors Mary T. Barra and Calvin R. McDonald, both lauded for their expertise in CEO and senior leadership succession planning for Fortune 500 companies.
Disney’s well-oiled succession planning process includes extensive evaluation and mentorship, with both internal and external candidates in the running. The committee has already convened six times in fiscal 2024 to ensure a seamless transition when Iger steps down.
