Harmony has been restored to the “Happiest Place on Earth”! Thousands of Disneyland Resort cast members recently overcame a significant hurdle by ratifying a deal that averted what could have been the park’s first strike in 40 years. This pivotal agreement not only touches Disneyland but also Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and the Disneyland Resort hotels.
Union officials have proclaimed that the newly ratified contracts bring historic raises, policies, and protections to staff members. “Disney cast members have secured historic raises and policies and protections that reflect their role as magic makers in the Disney parks,” said the union bargaining committee in a statement. This result follows months of intense negotiations and public demonstrations, including a notable rally outside the Disneyland entrance on July 17.
The Master Services Council, which represents approximately 14,000 Disneyland Resort employees, and the Walt Disney Co. achieved tentative deals just days after cast members voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike authorization. The new three-year agreements introduce pay increases, a higher minimum wage, and enhanced compensation for senior staff, among other benefits. Disneyland Resort spokesperson Jessica Good highlighted the company’s appreciation: “These agreements demonstrate how much we value our cast members and our profound commitment to their overall well-being.”
This recent development trails various labor-related actions over the past months, including accusations of unfair labor practices by Disney and a dispute over union buttons depicting Mickey Mouse’s raised fist. Such actions, according to the unions, are considered a protected form of collective action, though Disney has argued they breach dress code policies.
As cast members relish their new contracts, the union bargaining committee praised their unity and resolve, “Together by wearing buttons, attending rallies, and telling their stories to the public, cast members fought for a more promising future for themselves, their colleagues, and their families.” They believe these contracts mark a significant chapter for Disney cast members, promising an improved quality of life.
