Big news from The Walt Disney Company, folks! The Board of Directors has named James P. Gorman as the new Chair of its Succession Planning Committee. Gorman, who just joined the Disney Board earlier this year, is no newbie to this kind of challenge—having recently navigated a similar process at Morgan Stanley, where he serves as Executive Chairman. His rich experience and strategic mindset make him a perfect fit to guide Disney through this critical transition.
Mark G. Parker, Chairman of the Board, expressed his confidence in Gorman, stating, “James is a highly respected leader, and we’ve asked him to serve as the new Chair of the Succession Planning Committee given his deep succession planning experience and long-term strategic mentality.” Also on the Committee are directors Mark G. Parker, Mary T. Barra, and Calvin R. McDonald, all seasoned experts in CEO and senior leadership transitions for major Fortune 500 companies.
Since January 2023, the Board has heightened its succession planning efforts, forming a special Committee to streamline the process. They’ve already met six times in fiscal 2024, engaging comprehensively with the full Board. This diligent work involves evaluating both internal and external CEO candidates. Internal candidates, in particular, are receiving guidance from current CEO Robert A. Iger, alongside external coaching and direct interaction with the Board.
For those not as familiar with James P. Gorman, he’s an industry heavyweight. Currently the Executive Chairman at Morgan Stanley, he previously served as the firm’s CEO and Chairman. His illustrious resume also includes stints at Merrill Lynch and McKinsey & Co. Not to mention, he holds influential positions such as a Director of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Business Council. Clearly, Disney is in capable hands.
Disney’s dedication to this transition reflects its commitment to aligning leadership changes with its long-term strategic goals. The Board’s thorough and rapid approach ensures that any shifts will be smooth and seamless, allowing Disney to remain the beacon of family entertainment and magic that we all love.
