With the May 2024 opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Disney is introducing a heartwarming tribute to military service, weaving a tale that pays homage to Tiana’s father, James, who served in World War I. This immersive attraction underscores Disney’s dedication to celebrating and honoring those who serve, a tradition rooted in the history of Walt and Roy O. Disney, themselves veterans of World War I.
Ted Robledo, the executive creative director for Walt Disney Imagineering, shares that the team took great care in expanding James’ story. Drawing inspiration from real photos of soldiers, particularly those from the 369th Regiment, the Imagineers ensured authenticity in their depiction. This regiment, one of the first African American units in the American Expeditionary Forces, is renowned for its bravery and valor, with many of its members being awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government for their heroism.
For Charita Carter, executive creative producer, this project is deeply personal as she hails from a military family. She mentioned, “Growing up in a military family is a wonderful and challenging experience that we hoped to pay tribute to inside our newest attraction, even if in a small way.” The addition underscores the pride many families feel for their military heroes, mirroring Tiana’s pride for her father’s service.
May, being National Military Appreciation Month, highlights this initiative among various other Disneyland and Walt Disney World tributes. Besides the poignant flag retreat ceremonies, Disney continues to honor service members with initiatives like the Heroes Work Here program, which has already led to the hiring of over 12,500 veterans. Additionally, EPCOT is set to unveil a new Portraits of Courage exhibit by President George W. Bush on June 9th, honoring veterans through art.
