In a dazzling display of Disney magic, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) is celebrating Earth Month this April by rolling out new environmentally friendly initiatives that keep the magic sustainable. Among these magical updates is the enchanting Main Street Taxi, which has been converted from gasoline to electric power. This charming vehicle, reminiscent of early 20th-century horseless carriages, now features a motor that stays true to its vintage roots while improving air quality—right down to the simulated gas engine sounds for that nostalgic vibe.
But that’s not all! HKDL has also unveiled Hong Kong’s first and largest car park solar canopy. The first phase of this innovative project boasts nearly 200 bi-facial solar panels, providing shelter for 40 parking spaces. Once the second phase is completed, the number of solar panels will double, harnessing enough sunlight to generate over 200,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This massive leap toward clean energy reflects HKDL’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Another magical transformation is coming to the World of Frozen, where solar panels will soon adorn the rooftops of attractions like Frozen Ever After and Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs. By the end of 2025, the total number of solar panels at the resort will exceed 8,300—enough to power around 1,200 households for an entire year! Additionally, the installation of over 130 electric vehicle chargers ensures guests and cast members have access to cleaner, greener commuting options.
HKDL isn’t stopping at solar power. They’ve also implemented AI technology to optimize the cooling systems throughout the resort. Using an AI Digital Twin model, they can predict cooling loads and simulate operations, making the air-conditioning systems more efficient and reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.
These awe-inspiring efforts have earned HKDL numerous accolades, including the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence 2023 and the KPMG ESG 50 Awards 2024, underscoring their leading role in environmental sustainability.
