This summer marks a magical milestone at Disneyland — the “Happiest Place on Earth” is celebrating its 70th anniversary! Starting May 16, the Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration will honor seven decades of dreams, imagination, and Walt Disney’s enchanting vision. The festivities will continue through the summer of 2026, making it a yearlong extravaganza that you won’t want to miss.
Disneyland first welcomed guests into its fairy-tale world on July 17, 1955. While Disney famously said, “It all started with a mouse,” Andi Stein, a professor emeritus of communications at Cal State Fullerton, believes it was Disney’s boundless ideas and innovation that truly gave life to the park. Stein, who starred in the History Channel’s docuseries “How Disney Built America,” highlights that Disney’s initial plans for Disneyland were met with skepticism. Yet, today, with 12 Disney parks around the globe, his visionary spirit still shapes the world of entertainment.
The 70th Celebration is set to dazzle with updated attractions, anniversary décor, new parades, and a special anniversary theme song by the Jonas Brothers, “Celebrate Happy.” However, it’s the commemorative merchandise that will undoubtedly capture the hearts of Disney fans. From ears and apparel to pins and popcorn buckets, these anniversary items are designed to evoke cherished memories and foster a sense of nostalgia.
One standout feature in celebration of the anniversary is the refreshed Main Street Opera House, debuting “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” on July 17. This new attraction promises to offer a compelling look into Walt Disney’s journey, using cinematic experiences and audio-animatronics. While some hardcore Disney fans might have mixed feelings, Stein believes it’s a wonderful opportunity for new generations to connect with Walt Disney’s legacy.
Stein, who teaches a class on Deconstructing Disney at CSUF, will certainly have much to discuss with her students. The upcoming graduate course on Tourism Venues and Attractions will delve deeply into how marketing strategies have cemented Disneyland as an essential cultural touchstone.
As Disneyland celebrates 70 years filled with pixie dust, the park continues to enchant visitors of all ages. What are your favorite Disneyland memories? Share your thoughts in the comments and spread the magic by sharing this story with fellow Disney enthusiasts!
