The Walt Disney Company Board of Directors has appointed James P. Gorman as the chair of its Succession Planning Committee. Gorman, currently serving as the executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, will spearhead the vital process of selecting the next leader for the House of Mouse.
Bob Iger, Disney’s chief executive officer, recently expressed in an interview with SiriusXM his intention to retire, ensuring Disney is left in capable hands. Iger, who previously led Disney for 15 years before stepping down in 2020, returned after his successor Bob Chapek’s brief tenure ended abruptly in November 2022.
Iger’s commitment to Disney remains steadfast through 2026, reinforced by his contract extension last year. “James is a highly respected leader,” stated Mark G. Parker, Chairman of the Board of The Walt Disney Company, noting Gorman’s extensive experience and strategic mindset. Parker emphasized, “Succession planning is a top priority for the Board,” highlighting the ongoing dedication to ensuring a smooth leadership transition.
Gorman, who joined Disney’s Board earlier this year, reflected on his role in aiding the transition of leadership, “I look forward to working alongside Mark and my fellow Committee members.” The committee, which includes directors Mary T. Barra and Calvin R. McDonald, boasts a wealth of experience in executive leadership and succession planning.
The search for Iger’s successor includes both internal and external candidates, with internal contenders undergoing preparation and mentorship under Iger. Potential candidates rumored include ESPN’s chairman Jimmy Pitaro, Disney Parks chair Josh D’Amaro, and Disney Entertainment co-chairs Dana Walden and Alan Bergman.
