The search for Disney’s next CEO is reaching new heights! The Disney Board has announced that James P. Gorman will be stepping in as chair of the Succession Planning Committee. Gorman, who joined the board earlier this year, is no stranger to high-stakes transitions, having successfully managed a similar process at Morgan Stanley, where he serves as executive chairman.
“James is a highly respected leader,” said Mark Parker, chairman of the Disney board. Parker, who was previously the head of the Succession Committee, emphasized that succession planning is a top priority for the board. “I am eager to continue collaborating with James as we advance our efforts to identify and prepare the next CEO of The Walt Disney Company,” Parker added.
Joining Gorman and Parker on this crucial committee are directors Mary T. Barra and Calvin R. McDonald. All members bring substantial experience in CEO and senior leadership succession planning for Fortune 500 companies, making this committee a powerhouse of strategic expertise.
Since early 2023, Disney’s Board has ramped up its approach to CEO succession planning. A meticulous process has been set up to evaluate both internal and external candidates. Internal candidates are undergoing robust preparation, including mentorship from current CEO Robert A. Iger, as well as external coaching and engagement with all board directors.
Gorman, who will exit his role as chairman of Morgan Stanley in December, has a distinguished career that includes executive roles at Merrill Lynch and being a senior partner at McKinsey & Co. His extensive experience extends to roles on the Council on Foreign Relations and the Business Council.
