During the most recent D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, an announcement that has caused quite a stir is the unveiling of a new Walt Disney audio-animatronic figure. This figure is set to be the centerpiece of “Walt Disney — A Magical Life” at Disneyland’s Main Street Opera House, celebrating the park’s 70th anniversary. However, this move has not been without controversy, particularly within the Disney family itself.
Roy P. Disney, Walt’s grandnephew, attended the event to give his blessings, emphasizing the gravity and responsibility of creating such an animatronic. “Creating our first Walt figure is a huge responsibility, and we’ve brought members of the Disney family along with us for every step of the journey,” remarked Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro. Yet, many are questioning why direct descendants, like Walt Disney’s granddaughters, were not the ones to present their approval.
Joanna Miller, Walt Disney’s granddaughter through his daughter Diane, has openly expressed her disapproval. Using the Facebook page “It All Started With Walt Disney,” the organizer Leo N. Holzer shared Miller’s strong sentiments, revealing her discomfort with turning her grandfather into an animatronic figure. Miller articulates, “I am overwhelmed with disgust and anger. Mom would be ready to fight. I think it shows a lack of respect for Grampa. Walt is already branded and used by the company every day. We do not need to turn him into a robot.”
This isn’t the first time the idea of a Walt Disney animatronic has faced resistance. Former Imagineer Blaine Gibson had expressed skepticism about capturing Walt Disney’s intricate expressions through animatronics, a sentiment echoed back in a 1995 interview. He doubted whether the technology could authentically replicate Walt’s unique facial expressions. While animatronic technology has advanced significantly since then, the concerns about capturing the authenticity and spirit of Walt Disney in such a manner remain poignant.
As Disneyland prepares for this high-tech homage, it sparks a significant conversation among fans and family about balancing innovation with respect for legacy. What do you think about this decision? Share your thoughts in the comments below and let’s keep the conversation going.
