If there’s one thing Disney knows how to do, it’s put on a show!
During the colossal three-hour spectacle at Anaheim’s Honda Center for this year’s D23 Expo, fans were treated to a dazzling display of what Walt Disney Studios has in store. From Disney Animation and Pixar to Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios, the star-studded Disney Entertainment Showcase rolled out trailers, first-look footage, concept art, musical performances, pyrotechnics, and even an interactive magic trick.
Kicking things off was none other than Walt Disney Co. chief executive Bob Iger, who received a rock star welcome. “I was going to say good evening and thank you for that warm welcome, but that was more than a warm welcome,” Iger remarked, greeted by enthusiastic cheers and a standing ovation.
Among the spotlight stealers were filmmakers and actors like “Avatar’s” James Cameron, “Moana 2’s” Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, “Andor’s” Diego Luna, and “Ironheart’s” Ryan Coogler, among others. The festivities showcased a treasure trove of sequels and spinoffs set to capture the audience’s imagination.
Auliʻi Cravalho performed “We’re Back” from “Moana 2,” reuniting the film’s eponymous hero with demigod Maui. Disney Animation’s Jennifer Lee teased “Zootopia 2” and announced “Frozen III” and a surprising “Frozen IV.” Pixar’s Pete Docter confirmed “Incredibles 3” and “Toy Story 5,” along with the “Dream Production” series, an “Inside Out” spinoff.
Lucasfilm took the stage with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, showcasing “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” ready to weave Baby Yoda into its expanding cinematic universe. Marvel Studios, meanwhile, celebrated its series lineup with mentions of “Ironheart,” “Agatha All Along,” and “Daredevil: Born Again,” signaling a delightful roster of coming attractions on Disney+.
Pixar also revealed clips from the original movie “Elio” and announced “Hoppers,” while Disney Animation’s Lee hinted at more unshared original projects. Although familiar faces and worlds dominated the event, it’s clear that Disney still holds a penchant for innovation.
