This year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event presented by Visa® promises to wrap up on a high note on Sunday, August 11, with the eagerly anticipated Disney Legends Awards Ceremony. This longstanding tradition, spanning 37 years, celebrates creative pillars who have pushed the boundaries of imagination and innovation within The Walt Disney Company. This year’s distinguished honorees include industry titans such as Colleen Atwood, Angela Bassett, James Cameron, Harrison Ford, and the charismatic Frank Oz.
In an exclusive interview, legendary puppeteer and filmmaker Frank Oz delved into his dynamic journey and what it means to be recognized as a Disney Legend alongside his fellow Star Wars family members like Harrison Ford. “It’s very nice to continue being in that Star Wars family,” Oz remarked with warmth and gratitude. The actor behind the iconic Yoda sees the character as embodying “struggle, humor, responsibility, steadfastness, and gravitas.”
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Oz fondly recalled his time on The Muppet Show, cherishing the deep relationships with his colleagues, including Disney Legend Jim Henson. “The fun, the hard work, and the joy of collaborating with gifted people I cared about stand out the most,” he shared with nostalgia.
Transitioning from puppeteering to directing, Oz cited his collaboration with Henson on Dark Crystal as a pivotal turning point. “Jim’s support enabled me to transition into directing full-time,” he recalled. Among his proudest directorial achievements for Disney are a short segment on sound production and the beloved comedy What About Bob? starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfus.
Most recently, Oz reprised his role in Inside Out 2, a film that has become Pixar’s highest-grossing animation. Despite the film’s tremendous success, he humorously acknowledged the pressure. “It’s awesomely difficult. Dave Goelz and I are thrilled to be part of it, but we can’t carry Pixar’s movies on our shoulders indefinitely,” he mused.
