Walt Disney Company is gearing up for a drop in theme park attendance, according to its latest Q3 2024 earnings report. While the company’s streaming services have started to turn a profit, for the first time in its history, the theme parks are expected to see a decline in the fourth quarter.

Despite the recent successes in its entertainment arms, Disney’s operating income has experienced a 3% downturn. Senior Executive Vice President and CFO Hugh Johnston highlighted a “demand moderation” at the Disney parks, contributing to the expected slowdown. He reassured stakeholders that while the change is notable, it’s not a critical shift. The company has also significantly invested in its Disney Cruise Line, making it a crucial component of its domestic revenue.

Economic uncertainties are cited as a key factor contributing to the lower attendance expectations at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Johnston remains optimistic, asserting that the company continues to see long-term opportunities despite the current challenges. Notably, the Experiences segment, which includes park operations, is expected to see a mid-single-digit decline in Q4.

However, Disney parks have been buzzing with new attractions to woo visitors. Magic Kingdom has recently introduced Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and TRON Lightcycle / Run, while EPCOT boasts the addition of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. These new experiences have been well-received, showing Disney’s commitment to innovating and enhancing guest experiences.

With D23 just around the corner, guests can look forward to exciting announcements about upcoming projects, including new expansions and attractions. Disney’s ability to continuously evolve suggests a promising future, despite the temporary dip in attendance projections.
