Step into the spotlight with Payton, a dedicated intern with ESPN and the HBCU in LA program, who spent his summer gaining invaluable experience with the world’s leading sports media brand! The HBCU in LA initiative, part of the Entertainment Industry College Outreach Program (EICOP), offers students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) essential professional exposure in bustling cities like Los Angeles, New York City, and Atlanta. Disney proudly supports EICOP through its Disney Future Storytellers program.

Payton, a lifelong ESPN fan, shared his excitement: “I grew up watching ESPN and followed them on social media since I was a teen. It’s a dream come true to now be part of the content creation process.” His days are filled with content research, finding engaging stories to share on social media, and watching sporting events to craft compelling posts. One project that stood out to him was highlighting Lindsey Harding’s journey from Duke University and the WNBA to becoming an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers.

What really drives Payton is the chance to positively spotlight athletes and sports figures. “Being able to uplift them and highlight them in positive ways has always been a goal of mine,” he expressed passionately. His time at Bowie State University, an HBCU, provided a robust foundation. The supportive community and faculty at Bowie taught him resilience and inclusivity—skills that are vital in today’s media landscape.

Reflecting on his future, Payton feels optimistic and prepared. “The HBCU in LA program has been instrumental in shaping my career goals. It gave me a supportive community and invaluable networking opportunities. Being immersed in diverse perspectives has widened my understanding and boosted my confidence and leadership skills.”

Payton’s advice for newcomers at ESPN is golden: “Never be afraid to ask questions and be a sponge. ESPN offers a community that’s helpful, warm, and welcoming. Shadow as many departments as possible—you never know where you’ll find a new interest.”
