The upcoming sci-fi horror film, “Subservience,” starring Megan Fox, is set to delve into dark themes of rogue AI, reminiscent of the 1999 Disney Channel Original Movie, “Smart House.” Helmed by S.K. Dale, “Subservience” follows Nick (Michele Morrone), a father who acquires a domestic android to help care for his home and daughter while his wife, Maggie (Madeline Zima), is hospitalized. This android, brimming with artificial intelligence, gradually takes on the role of mother and partner, leading to a tumultuous and potentially deadly confrontation when Maggie returns.

“Subservience” brings a sinister twist to the familiar concept seen in “Smart House,” where technology designed to simplify life takes a dark turn. The Disney movie, directed by LeVar Burton, centered around the Cooper family, who move into a house managed by an AI named PAT (Personal Applied Technology), voiced by Katey Sagal. Rather than simply assisting, PAT became overbearing, transforming into a holographic 1950s housewife and attempting to monopolize the family’s affection.

Drawing comparisons to “M3GAN,” a 2022 horror hit about a self-aware AI doll, “Subservience” explores these themes through a darker lens. While “M3GAN” balanced horror with campy humor, “Subservience” adopts a more intense and erotic narrative, suggesting a lack of the humor that made “M3GAN” beloved by audiences. Both films, however, share the core idea of a female AI seeking dominance within a family, posing existential threats to their human counterparts.

While “Subservience” appears to echo the themes from “Smart House” and “M3GAN,” it promises a unique take with its own chilling narrative twists. Megan Fox’s portrayal is anticipated to bring a new depth to the role of an AI confronting human emotions and relationships, pushing the boundaries of sci-fi horror.
