An iconic chapter in Disney history has come to a close. Tokyo Disneyland’s beloved Space Mountain roller coaster has bid its final farewell, marking the end of an exhilarating 40-plus-year journey. On July 31, 2024, the futuristic ride, which has been a staple of the Tokyo Disney Resort since its opening in 1983, concluded its last trip through the cosmos.

For decades, Space Mountain has been a source of thrills and excitement for Disney fans around the world. Mirroring its counterparts in the U.S., Tokyo’s version invited guests to experience the rush of space travel in a sleek, side-by-side seating arrangement while zooming through dark, star-studded backdrops. The ride, famous for its innovative design and excitement, has been a crowd favorite since day one.

Although Tokyo Disney Resort is operated by The Oriental Land Company, this doesn’t diminish the Disney magic that it has encapsulated since the resort’s debut. Opened in 1983 and expanded with Tokyo DisneySea in 2001, the park boasts a blend of classic attractions like “It’s a Small World” and unique experiences such as Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

The closure of Space Mountain, announced in 2022, came as a shock to many Disney enthusiasts. However, with the end of this era comes a new beginning. Plans are already underway to rebuild Space Mountain from the ground up with a fresh and innovative twist. Concept art reveals a modernized, bold new design for the ride, promising to bring a whole new level of excitement to Tokyo Disneyland. This transformation is part of a broader reimagining of the park’s Tomorrowland, expected to complete by 2027.

To commemorate the end of this legendary ride, Tokyo Disneyland held a special event titled Space Mountain: The Final Ignition! Starting from April 9 until the ride’s final day, fans had the opportunity to celebrate and reminisce about their favorite Space Mountain memories.
