Disney Cruise Line has just unveiled its newest gem in the Bahamas: Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Earlier this week, Mickey and Minnie Mouse themselves kicked off the festivities with their version of Junkanoo, a spirited nod to the Bahamas’ annual festival of unity, welcoming the first guests to this breathtaking locale.
Unique in its charm, Lookout Cay is Disney Cruise Line’s second island destination, a 900-acre paradise on the island of Eleuthera. Meticulously crafted by Walt Disney Imagineers in collaboration with local Bahamian artists, the island showcases the rich culture and vibrant artistry of the Bahamas. Guests can explore nature trails, splash around in a water play area, and relax on pristine beaches designed to delight both families and adults.
“The goal for our team is to celebrate the Bahamas and the beauty of the island of Eleuthera,” declared Kevin Thomas, Walt Disney Imagineering creative director. At Lookout Cay, guests dive into the local culture through art, music, storytelling, and dramatic structures that look like vibrant, oversized seashells scattered along the coastline. The island’s venues, including dining pavilions, bars, and the Goombay Cultural Center, burst with bright, Bahamian-inspired colors.
Notable Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts expressed his pride at contributing to the project, stating he believes the destination will leave a lasting impact on visitors through Disney’s commitment to promoting cultural appreciation.
Disney Cruise Line has gone above and beyond to ensure that Lookout Cay remains a sanctuary for Eleuthera’s natural beauty. The company developed less than 16% of the site, leaving the majority of the land untouched, and committed to a zero-waste landfill policy. Impressively, 90% of the destination’s energy needs are met through renewable sources.
