The original Splash Mountain made its debut at Disneyland in 1989 and expanded to Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland in 1992, showcasing characters from the controversial 1946 Disney film **“Song of the South.”** Over the years, the movie faced severe criticism for its racially insensitive depictions and its idealized portrayal of the pre-Civil War South. In response to the growing calls for more inclusive storytelling, Disney decided it was time for a change.
While the physical structure of the classic log flume remains untouched, guests will find themselves completely immersed in the vibrant world of Tiana’s Louisiana bayou. From the moment they step into their log boats, riders will be serenaded by the film’s joyous melodies and swept away by a story brimming with excitement and heart.
Before its grand opening, park employees and annual passholders will have the exclusive opportunity to preview the ride, allowing them to experience the magic firsthand. Meanwhile, over on the West Coast, Disneyland’s version of Splash Mountain is also undergoing its transformation to become Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, although a specific opening date has yet to be announced. As for Tokyo Disneyland, their Splash Mountain will remain in its original form for the time being.
