Operations at Hong Kong Disneyland have hit a major snag this weekend due to Mother Nature’s unpredictable whims. While Disney usually works its magic to ensure an unforgettable experience for all, certain occurrences—like tropical storms—are beyond even Mickey’s control.

Historically, weather disturbances have led to the temporary closures of Disney parks across the globe. The most prolonged closures were due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which shuttered the gates of all six Disney resorts worldwide for an extended period. However, even without a global pandemic, weather remains a significant disruptor. Parks in regions like Florida frequently face the brunt of hurricanes, but no Disney park is entirely safe from extreme weather. For instance, Disneyland Resort in California had to close early in 2023 due to Hurricane Hilary, marking it the first hurricane to impact the original park in almost 70 years.

Hong Kong Disneyland, since its inception in 2005, has been no stranger to storms. The park has weathered numerous typhoons—Asia’s equivalent of hurricanes. As recently as September, the park had to shut down entirely due to Typhoon Saola, which caused considerable disruption at the resort.

Currently, a tropical depression is threatening to sweep across the Guangdong coast, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rainfall. This unwelcome weather condition has forced Hong Kong Disneyland to preemptively close all outdoor attractions and shows. By yesterday afternoon, iconic rides like Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs, Dumbo, and Jungle Cruise were off-limits from 4:30 p.m. local time.

Despite the bleak forecast, as of 4 p.m. HKT today, the park remains open with a caveat: all outdoor attractions are suspended. The Hong Kong Disneyland website and app have issued notices informing guests that a Strong Wind Signal No. 3 is in effect.

Among the 14 attractions currently closed are fan favorites like Cinderella Carousel, RC Racer, and the Hong Kong Disneyland Railroad. There hasn’t been an update on whether the seasonal Marvel drone show, “Find Your Super Power: Battle in the Sky,” or the “Momentous” Nighttime Spectacular will proceed tonight.
